Homestay Families in Samara

Learn Spanish in Costa Rica

The homestays we offer are a key part of our Spanish program.  We select Costa Rican families in Sámara within walking distance of the school and beach (from half a block to max.1 mile /1.5 kms). All students are encouraged to participate in this opportunity, as it provides an invaluable source to learn Spanish as well as a wonderful interpersonal experience. Homestays are, in our opinion, the most effective way to practice the Spanish you learn in the classroom. Living with a family who speaks little or no English, combined with intensive language study in the classroom, provides a wholly integrated exposure to both the language and the culture. The learning process is greatly facilitated, as is the speed with which fluency is acquired.

Homestays also provide an economical alternative to hotels, as breakfast, dinner, private room and laundry service are included in the price. Probably the most valuable aspect of the homestay experience, however, is the opportunity to really get to know a Costa Rican family, making many new friends and experiencing first-hand the famous Costa Rican warmth and hospitality!

Please remember that the standard of living is different: houses are built simply, in a rustic style, and as in any tropical climate, you will see more bugs than you are used to. If you choose the option to live with a Spanish-speaking host family, keep an open mind and remember that true cultural experiences often require certain sacrifices, but can also broaden your horizons in ways you may never have imagined!

IMPORTANT:
Families are paid from Sunday to Sunday in Sámara, regardless of whether the student leaves before Sunday. Therefore, if a student returns early to a family in Heredia the cost is $23 (with breakfast and dinner) for each additional night in Heredia. Students in homestay may also stay in Sámara until Sunday and take the public bus back to San Jose/Heredia at 8:30am or 3pm.

Students may add up to a maximum of 4 additional nights with their host family. After 4 nights, the full week rate will be charged.

Almost the entire amount that students pay go to our host families and Intercultura only keeps a very small administration fee to help pay for our homestay coordinator, student support, house visits, evaluations, etc.   This is yet another way that we are able to give back to the community, and by participating in the Spanish immersion program, not only will you learn about the culture and practice the language, but you will also directly help your host families with the upkeep of their houses (purchasing furniture, paying rent, repairs, etc.) and with maintaining their family members (school, medication, food etc.).  Thank you for being a part of this important experience!
