Teen Spanish Programs in Costa Rica
Adventure Spanish Camp for Teens Costa Rica 2012
Learn Spanish in Costa Rica -- live an amazing adventure!! July 22 - August 5, 2012
Welcome!

You might have already heard of our ADVENTURE SPANISH CAMP FOR TEENS. This year, the camp will go even further and offer even more adventurous and thrilling outdoor activities along with more ways to immerse yourself in the culture and actually make a difference in people’s lives, by having the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas.
So if you’re between 13 and 18, come to Costa Rica this summer to learn Spanish and surf, do zip-lining and rafting, go on a Tarzan swing, do a high ropes course, explore some natural hot springs, hike through the rainforest, ride horses in the jungle, see gigantic waterfalls, sea turtles and crocodiles, explore volcanoes and get to know the abundant wildlife and landscapes this small country possesses.
Classes

Monday to Friday, you will receive 4 hours of intensive Spanish classes in our air-conditioned classrooms, where each teacher will have no more than 6 students. You will be amazed by how much Spanish you will learn in a short time. At night, you will practice your Spanish with your new “Tico” (Costa Rican) family, or have them help you with your homework or studies. At school, you will have many other opportunities to learn Spanish while learning how to cook a typical dish, practicing your new Salsa steps or watching a movie in Spanish.
Dates 2012
July 22 - August 5
Arrivals and Departures
Arrival and departure dates/guidelines for each session must be followed exactly, according to the dates above. Teens should fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport, San José, Costa Rica (SJO airport code). You must arrive and leave on the days indicated. If you were not to do so, you would miss weekend excursions, and would have to travel without a chaperone or pay for your own private guide. You would also have to pay any extra for resulting alternate transportation and lodging.
Fees
Intercultura's 2012 Summer Spanish & Adventure Camp lasts for two weeks. The session costs $1993 USD and is all-inclusive for 2 weeks: airport pick-up and drop-off, chaperones and guides, Spanish classes, lodging, all meals, snacks, activities, entrance fees, and tours by bus and boat (airfare to and from Costa Rica is not included). Multiple-student/session and need-based financial assistance is available.

Camp Facilities
Classes take place in Sámara at our tropical, beachfront campus (with air-conditioned or open-air classrooms), and in Heredia, at our beautiful colonial city campus. Intercultura's campuses provide free Internet and wireless, tropical gardens, hammocks, study and social areas, language lab, fully-equipped classrooms, dance studio, stage, TV room, our friendly multi-lingual support staff, and in Sámara, football and volleyball on the beach, and outdoor showers to rinse off after a quick swim between classes!
Camp Staff
Camp staff consists of two chaperones (one native English-speaker and one Costa Rican), school administrative support staff, Teen Program Coordinators, Latin dance and cooking teachers, experienced tour guides, and highly qualified Spanish teachers. All Spanish professors have a Bachelor's degree in Education, Literature, and/or Linguistics (most hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language); our senior staff also have their Master's degree in the same field. All Spanish teachers are native speakers with considerable experience in teaching Spanish as a second language, and they all receive continuing education at university seminars and conferences on language acquisition techniques and methods. Most importantly, our Teen Camp Spanish teachers are trained in adolescent pedagogical methods and utilize Intercultura's own course texts and materials, which have been especially developed for teen learners.

Community Service
Community service is an important part of the program. It is a chance to give something back to the communities that receive us and instills a feeling of participation, consciousness, and responsibility. Students are expected to participate with a positive attitude in this opportunity for mutual benefit and exchange. Activities may include beach clean-up, turtle patrol, and non-profit child education programs, or similar. NOTE: Teens do not have the option to refuse to participate in these activities--this part of the program should be discussed and agreed upon with parents before signing up for the program.
Camp Description
WEEK 1 in HEREDIA:
You will arrive on Sunday, July 22nd at the San Jose Airport (SJO). You will be picked up by your host family and brought home, where you’ll be staying for 1 week, sharing breakfasts, dinners, and conversations with your new family. While in beautiful colonial Heredia, you will attend Spanish classes in the mornings and participate in a variety of fun activities in the afternoons and evenings. Latin dance classes, a city tour, dinner out on the town, an afternoon swimming and participating in recreational activities will give you a good taste of city life in Costa Rica. You'll hike to Los Chorros Waterfalls, introducing you to the natural beauty in and around the central valley, and visits to the Café Britt Coffee Plantation will offer a deeper understanding of important Costa Rican traditions, culture and products.
After classes on Friday, you will head off to an exotic location in Costa Rica where you will spend the whole weekend (2 nights – 3 days) participating in an array of amazing activities like horseback riding, canopy tour (zip-lining), suspension bridges, visits to hot springs, waterfalls, and eco-hikes, where you may see white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, brightly multi-colored crabs, dragon iguanas and scarlet macaws.

For the week starting July 29th, you will be in beautiful Sámara Beach staying in a hotel with a swimming pool and close access to the beach, where you will enjoy various activities such as: surfing, sea kayaking, beach-bonfires, biking, etc.
WEEKEND TRIPS:

You will get the opportunity to see an almost perfectly symmetrical volcano, Arenal, the cloud forests of Monteverde, the magical turquoise waters of Rio Celeste, the jungle, waterfalls and hot-springs of the National Park Rincon de la Vieja or the rocky landscape and the crashing waves of Montezuma, where you may spot humpback whales on your way to Isla Tortuga…
This camp is like no other!

DURING THE WEEK:
Even weekdays, as soon as Spanish classes are over, you are off again to discover the life, the diversity and the astonishing culture. You may join in a Latin dance class, a typical cooking class, local handicrafts workshop, go to a Spanish movie, organize a soccer game with the locals, a beach clean-up, a BBQ, a karaoke (in Spanish!), pizza party, visit a National Park, volcanoes, farms… the list is endless.
On your last day, you will return to your host families in Heredia for one last night. You will
have to say good-bye to your newly-made friends and Tico family, and on Monday, your mamá Tica will bring you back to the airport (SJO) for your return flight home, your head filled with amazing new memories.
